Brian Bernard was the best friend of Emil Lang and boyfriend of Nina Lang.

In the Global War in fall in 1998, Millers Militia took over Los Angeles and San Francisco. Brian and his parents were in San Bernadino and tried to escape to the Internationalist Force on the coast but they were killed and Brian was going to be enslaved. But Scott Fielder got to him 1st and was Millers Tech Wizard who kept the Power and Phones working. But really he was using is position with Miller to work against him. Brian fought for the Salamander Unit and after The Internationalist freed the city, he went to college but said if there's anything he can do to repay Fielder, he'd do it

He arrived on Macross Island in 2005 around the time of the kidnapping of Nina by Anatole Leonard. and stayed in the Hotel Millenium. Emil called him saying he had Family Issues to deal with and had Janet Fein handle him. Later he worked for the RDF for Lang on a Veritech Simulation Program .

Nina was introduced to him and the two started a romance. Emil, however, secretly informed Bernard that Nina's relationships tended not to last, and that she may still have held some romantic feelings for Roy Fokker despite being in a relationship with Bernard. However, Brian stated that he did not mind and wanted to enjoy the company whilst it lasted. Knowledge of Nina Lang being romantically involved with Bernard would become well known amongst the population. Afterwards, Bernard later confessed his past life to Nina, about the debt he owed to the hacker known as the Salamander. After Salamander got in using Brian's Computer and guesses his Password, Nina, to get access to the SDF-1 Computers and Lang contacted Brian over it, Brian reported to Lang and told him, what he knew of Salamander and how he guessed his password. Lang warned Brian that accessing the Alien Computer can have Side Effects and be dangerous.

Behind the scenes[]

Though it is left ambiguous in the series, it is possible that Brian is meant to be Scott Bernard's father. This would make sense with the continuity of the comics, where in Emil is Scott's god-father.
