Doctor Emil Lang was a brilliant human scientist/engineer and one of Earth's foremost Robotechnology experts.

He was instrumental in rebuilding the SDF-1 after it crash-landed on Macross Island. He continued his work at the Robotech Academy.

When the SDF-1 was stuck in its journey home after a mis-timed Space Fold, he was a key designer and advisor.

Years later, he helped design the SDF-3 and helped lead the Pioneer Expedition. His nephew as Scott Bernard.

Lang was also instrumental in countering General T. R. Edwards during the REF Civil War.
