A helicopter was a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust were supplied by rotors. This allowed the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards, and laterally. These attributes allowed helicopters to be used in congested or isolated areas where fixed-wing Aircraft and many forms of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft cannot perform. They were used by the US Navy to fulfill a range of requirements from combat air patrol, precision strikes, anti-submarine activities, transportation and search and rescue.
