Janek Chase was a Human scientist who worked for the RDF during the First Robotech War.
He was assigned to Research Base Gibraltar located in the Asteroid Belt. When Captain Gloval sent Rick and Max over, he was filled in on Com Link with Gloval. They went to a large video screen that McKinley was caught using to watch Japanimation which Rick and Max guessed was Ranma 1/2 or Lupin. On the screen they are shown the new Super Valkyrie as it battled Zentraedi and revealed to them the P.O. Mark III Anti-Zentraedi Rifle. Professor Evelyn Ashland the head of Zentraedi Research and studies arrived and the 2 Pilots were attracted to her. She showed them a Zentraedi Mech they gained 2 months ago and had no data on previously so they were analyzing it. Its power core had failed but really it was a tracking device that triggers for 1 second every 64 Earth days. The power surged for an instant in the mech to alert Breetai and Exedore and Evelyn took note as Chase showed the Pilots the prototype for the VFI2. The pilots were impressed and were introduced to Lt. Com McGavin who was the Test Pilot who also flew with Roy Fokker in the Global War. Max inquired as to where the materials for production were obtained from and Chase told him its was mined from nearby asteroids. Also the base was camouflaged by asteroids and had many weapons around it along with 3 Super Veritechs and 35 Ghost Fighters. The only way the enemy could get them was to appear right at their doorstep. Chase showed them the Power Core, a fusion generator that powered the base and satellites with a back up source that would last 120 days. Meanwhile, Calen folded near and attacked (Robotech: Wings of Gibraltar: 1)
Max took the VFI2 despite resistance from Dr's Chase and Ashland thinking it would be too advanced for him. Ashland took Rick and Chase to the armory to procure weapons for defense as the battle continued. The base was damaged by enemy attacks and Ashland was killed in the explosion. A Power Armor broke into the area with Rick and Chase who took out its head with an Anti-Zentraedi Rifle. After roughing through the damaged base, Rick and Chase made it to the Mythos XFC 3 with McKinley and escaped the crumbling base. After linking to the VF12, the Mythos XFC 3 Folded and escaped as the damaged base blew and wiped out the remaining Zentraedi forces. Chase lamented his research being gone and Rick told him off for caring more for data than the men who fell in the conflict (Robotech: Wings of Gibraltar: 2).

His appearance is quite similar to Conrad Wilbur, which is mentioned when Rick met him as he claimed scientists often look similar.
