John Carpenter was an Earth forces officer who joined the REF.
He led a voyage back home to Earth from Tirol space, and arrived in the middle of the Second Robotech War.
Later he stayed on Earth and fell in love with Bekka Cade, and joined the anti-Invid resistance, fighting in the assault on Reflex Point. After the war he became involved with Belmont.
