Lazlo Zand was a scientist and Emil Lang's apprentice. Lazlo Zand and Edwards were among the 1st cleared to enter the SDF-1 when it 1st landed on Earth, where he met Roy Fokker. (Robotech: Robotech 9) Zand, coming to understand that the SDF-1 was designed to travel between dimensions, began working on a secret scheme to manipulate events behind the scenes. He convinced the RDF that the SDF-1 was intended as a cloning station, and was greenlit to secretly begin using Fokker's DNA to create several copies of him. Hiding in a secret pocket dimension onboard the ship, he then began manipulating events, hoping to make the human race a superpower in the universe.
Using clones of Roy, he had Captain Gloval murdered. He then kidnapped Roy and, in his place, put into play one of his clones. After the arrival of Edwards, who Zand knew would eventually reveal his plot, Zand had one of the Roy clones assassinate him by gunshot. Eventually, the crew of the ship caught on that "Roy" was acting maliciously and Rick Hunter was sent to stop him. Much to his horror, Rick had to shoot down "Roy" in space, killing his brother. Zand hoped to cause a conflict between the Zentraedi and the Invid, by manipulating events to send them to Earth sooner than before. Much to his horror, when the Regess did begin her attack on Earth, she also targered his pocket dimension, making him totally viable. (Robotech: Robotech Free Comic Book Day 2019, et. al)
