Malcontent refers to Zentraedi who were dissatisfied with living on Earth. They banded together and lived out of human society, often attacking human towns and raiding them for supplies and Protoculture. In some cases, these Malcontents would begin organized rebellions and uprisings, some successfully. (Robotech: The Macross Saga)
History[]
During the Malcontent Uprisings, Khyron and Azonia lead the majority of the Malcontent Zentraedi. Their aim was merely to destroy the SDF-1, an obsession of Khyron's since the First Robotech War. They would launch raids from his secret base, attacking towns and military bases to arm his forces. In the end, they were able to repower a cruiser, and used it to destroy the SDF-1. However, this act also killed them. (Robotech: The Macross Saga)
Zeraal's Forces[]
Zeraal led a sub-faction of the Malcontent often fighting the forces of Base-6. While beginning as one of Khyron's brigades, they quickly distinguished themselves and broke away, as Zeraal and Khyron did not see eye-to-eye. What made his forces different from Khyron's was that they were a professional army, supplied not by raiding settlements but by a downed carrier at Zentraedi City, which allowed them to be much more bold with their attacks. Another difference was in their motivations: Zeraal was bent on taking over Earth, not just destroying the SDF-1, in preparation for the arrival of the Robotech Masters. They came close to conquering the wasteland, which with the RDF seriously wounded after Khyron's attack would have allowed them to march onto the rest of the planet. However, they were defeated, and Zeraal was killed a short time later. (Robotech: Battlecry)
Behind the scenes[]
Although the Malcontents featured heavily in the novels and the Robotech II: Sentinels comics, those sources are secondary continuity, and the time period is relatively unexplored in the Core series.
The Malcontents are a playable faction in Robotech RPG Tactics, mixing UEDF and Zentraedi mecha.
