According to one source, Paul was a Military soldier who, in 1999, was tasked with working machines outside of the recently crashed SDF-1. When one of his peers noticed that the Robby Robot had moved inside the ship. Paul clarified that he was not controlling the robot, and that Lang had the controls. (Robotech: The Graphic Novel)
