The SDF-1 was originally Zor's battlefortress before he sent it to the far corners of the galaxy, where it crashed on Earth and was built over 10 years. The Protoculture Matrix was hidden aboard. On the eve of its launch, the Zentraedi found it. Under the command of Captain Henry Gloval, it took off. A failed Space Fold took it past Pluto, and they started on a long journey home. Once back home, the RDF refused to let them land, and Gloval spearheaded the assault against Dolza. It was destroyed when it was rammed by Khyron's cruiser, and buried.
It was later seen that in a stable time loop, the fold engines were pulled across time and space by the children of the heroes to save the SDF-3.
