Lieutenant Commander Scott Bernard was the nephew of Emil Lang and joined his uncle during the Robotech Expeditionary Force. He was vital in helping expose General T. R. Edward's coup attempt.
Later, Bernard served as a squadron leader in the 21st Mars Division. During the failed Second Earth Reclamation Force mission against the Invid, he spearheaded the mission, but his fiancee's Marlene Rush's ship was destroyed.
Bernard landed on Earth, the sole survivor. He vowed to continue the mission to Reflex Point. In short order, he met Rand, Rook Bartley, Lunk, Annie LaBelle, and Lance Belmont, forming the core of the Robotech Rebels. During the next year, they traveled to Reflex Point and fought the Invid along the way. They also found Ariel, and Bernard fell in love with her.
During the third Earth Reclamation mission, the rebels were instrumental in convincing the Regess to depart.
In the aftermath, he was involved in the incident with Haydon alongside the crew of the Ark Angel. Afterward, he introduced Ariel to the parents of Marlen Rush, who struggled to accept her.
