The Southern Grand Cannon was one of Earth's Robotech technological wonders after the SDF-1 arrived. It was placed at Antarctic Base, but was destroyed by a Reflex missile launched by the Anti-Unification League in 2006. (Robotech: From the Stars)
According to one source, later, after the Rain of Death, the site was a refuge for people in the Southlands. (Robotech II: The Sentinels: The Malcontent Uprisings).
It was completed but never operational, and its existence was covered up by the United Earth Government. In January 2019, the Malcontent Zeraal led his band there in order to blow it up. However, Breetai sabotaged their trigger relays, allowing time for Pegasus Squadron to arrive and stop the plot. Major General Rick Hunter dueled Zeraal, who manually triggered the Reflex Furnace, leading to a massive explosion and radiation leak, which would take a year to disband to minimum safe levels.
