Thomas Riley Edwards was a mercenary pilot and rival to Roy Fokker. He was among the first group to explore the SDF-1 when it crashed on Macross Island. He faced Roy in aerial combat and was a match for his skills but upon the Macross Incident, was invited as a representative from the Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, which Roy saw as fascist, but Edwards thought Roy's side was no better and his side paid more. After exloring the craft he was given a role in the new United Earth Government and was higher ranked than Roy.
