The VF-1D Valkyrie was a Veritech used on Earth, most common used in practice during the First Robotech War. Known pilots included Rick Hunter during his first (involuntary) battle and Jack Archer during training. (Robotech: The Macross Saga, Robotech: Battlecry)

Technology & Combat Characteristics

It was Earth's first transformable trans-atmospheric fighter. Powered by fusion engines, the VF-1 was fully space-capable, and was carried in great numbers on the SDF-1 as well as the Armor series of carriers. The VF-1 supported 3 modes of operation: fighter mode for aerospace superiority missions, guardian mode for close air support missions, and battloid mode for ground combat missions.

The VF-1D tandem cockpit made it the primary vehicle for training Veritech pilots. These trainers, designated VT, were rarely used in combat.

A VF-1D was parked at the air show on the day of the launch of the SDF-1. Skull Leader Roy Fokker was going to show Rick Hunter how to fly it. The Zentraedi arrived and Fokker was called away, leaving Hunter in the cockpit of VT-101. He took off and joined the aerial battle, but was shot down. He switched to Battloid mode and crashed into Macross City. He was eventually trapped in it after rescuing Lynn Minmei, and Fokker had to remove the cockpit to rejoin the SDF-1 before its spacefold.

Behind the scenes

Multiple VF-1Ds in the brown color scheme were seen in the episode "Wedding Bells". This is an animation error and they should have been VF-1As.
