The Veritech VF-1 was Earth's first transformable trans-atmospheric fighter. Powered by fusion engines, the VF-1 was fully space-capable, and was carried in great numbers on the SDF-1 as well as the Armor series of carriers. The VF-1 supported 3 modes of operation: fighter mode for aerospace superiority missions, guardian mode for close air support missions, and battloid mode for ground combat missions. (Infopedia)
Although ace squadron leaders were generally assigned white Veritechs (Infopedia), some had the same brown-and-white schemes as the VF-1A Valkyries. (MS: "Countdown")
Rick Hunter flew a white-with-red trim VF-1J for most of his career before the SDF-1 returned to Earth and his second one was shot down by friendly fire. He was then assigned to Skull-One. Max Sterling and Miriya Sterling were assigned VF-1Js, (The Macross Saga) as was Jack Archer following the Rain of Death. (Battlecry) Trainee pilot Hiro Amano also flew a VF-1J. (Vermilion)
The VF-1J was discontinued after 2014 and surviving fighters were eventually upgraded to the VF-1R Valkyrie model. (Infopedia)
