Virgil Smythe was a member of the RDF in the mid 00s and served in the Global War of the 90s.
Biography[]
In the Global War of the 90s, the Trans Americans joined the Internationalists and Claudia Grant was assigned to the USS Kenosha where she met Henry Gloval and Virgil Smythe who she was attracted to (Robotech: Return To Macross: War Stories).
In June of 2005 the Orion performed a test but the 3rd thruster didn't turn off and has an emergency splashdown in the ocean. Roy Fokker was sent out to rescue it as it had 2 dozen construction workers for the Achilles as rescue ships are too far to help. Roy called to the Lemurians who equipped flotation devices to the Orion that would self destruct in 2 minutes so the RDF couldn't trace them. Roy used a Cable to raise the ship and recognized Virgil Smythe as the pilot and upon hearing Claudia was on Macross Island, he got excited. (Robotech: Return to Macross: Making A Big Splash)
Later, Virgil called Claudia and left a message on her answering machine and after some debate, Claudia returns his call and agrees to see him tomorrow at 9. Later, he goes to see Scott Fielder under orders from Reynaldo Da Silva(Robotech: Return To Macross: War Stories).
In July Claudia reunited with Virgil and they kissed and talked but Virgil was going back into space tp bring more people to work on the Achilles but once its over he can return to her. He revealed he got tickets to The Glittering Star which was booked weeks in advance but he had friends in low places. With 30 minutes before it leaving, Claudia didn't have time to change and they talked about how he doesn't need to compete with Roy Fokker. After their date on the Glittering Star, Da Silva talked with Virgil about him bringing Claudia to the ship and how Salamander downloaded Admiral Hayes's final itinerary and they needed everyone online to make their move(Robotech: Return To Macross: Coming Attractions).
At Lisa's Apartment Claudia and Virgil came in while talking of a win at the Glittering Star and Lisa ran to her room as she's in pajamas. Virgil looked around and git out some wine and Roy barged in drunk. He confronted Virgil over how Roy saved his life and this is how he repays him and they fight and he beats up Virgin but Claudia stops him and tells them things are over between them. On The Glittering Star, Virgil and Da Silva talked of how Gerald McBain told Virgil to stay near Claudia and how he found Admiral Hayes's list Salamander downloaded was useless as Virgil found a different list at Lisa and Claudia's place, but dropped the letter in the fight with Roy (Robotech: Return to Macross: Storm Warnings).
During the storm on the day of the concert on the Glittering Star Da Silva tried to enact the Federalist plan to capture Lisa but Lisa declined and Roy busted in and says he learned from the guards he beat out that Virgil and his employers are dangerous. Da Silva pulled a gun on Roy and Roy said he won't shoot him in front of all these witnesses. Da Silva said he's only detaining him until the authorities arrive but Roy reveals he alerted Tom Bennington and the RDF Security will be here soon. Da Silva took Claudia hostage but Virgil took him out with a headshot (Robotech: Return to Macross: Storm Surge).
Virgil said Da Silva was losing it and needed to be stopped and tells the guards if they don't help with Lisa and her friends, then it'll will ruin everything. An alarm went off due to Salamander's hacking and the ship is evacuated. Later the Mobile Launch Assembly was attacked by McBain and his The Sons Of The Constitution as well as other Federalists who took over but the power was shut off. Toshiro Nagata and his squad took over a Destroid Defender and announced that they had Admiral Hayes captive but if the crew obeyed, they will be spared. They used 2 shuttles, the Orion and the Gryphon to try to take the Achilles as it only had a skeleton crew and their jets delayed Roy, Scott and Perlman long enough to launch them (Robotech: Return to Macross: Achille's Heel).
When the Federalists in the shuttles reached the Achilles and told them to surrender or they'd execute Admiral Hayes. Smythe revealed he knew Louise Mayhew was tough and wouldn't be easily stopped with threats like McBains men. Mayhew surrendered as Dr. Harris Seuling tampered with the ship. The Armor-1 launched SF-3 Lancers against the Achilles and the attackers said to stop or Hayes is dead, but the virus put into the system kicked in and shut off the electrical systems including life support. In 8 hours it would burn up on reentry and in 6 the atmosphere would be spent but the only way to reactivate it is a voice command from Seuling who's in a spacesuit being picked up by Armor-1. Nagata shot Mayhew and Virgil beat out him McBain to escape using his 1st hand knowledge of the ship. (Robotech: Return to Macross: High Combat)
After the RDF has regained control of the Achilles and captured the leaders and Dr. Seuling restored the ships systems, Roy shot down Virgil's shuttle over the Pacific Ocean. Virgil got out in a life raft and said he regrets letting Claudia down and wanted to get her off Macross Island before McBain and his crew took it down. He went on about how others will try to rise up after the Federalists but Roy saw that Virgil was trying to bring him down with him and flew away as the Shuttle self destructed, killing Virgin(Robotech: Return to Macross: Never Can Say Goodbye).
